The Date Masamune Letter

The Date Masamune Letter

In the seventeenth century, Date Masamune, the Sendai daimyo, entrusted Hasekura Tsunenaga with a letter to the Pope stating that he promised to accept and help propagate the Christian religion and requested the Pope’s intermediation with the King of Spain. The embassy Date sent to Europe achieved audiences with the Pope and the king, but the Bakufu issued its prohibition on Christianity, matters could go no further. The Iwakura Mission, which reached Italy in the Meiji period, shed light on that earlier historic event.
