A martial arts trainer Vasudeva is visiting Japan from Russia to attend a 3-day tough training which involves no sleep and no food to strengthen his mental approach. He has found this training online hoping to apply to his own training back home. There's no way we're going to miss this opportunity, we've officially requested for a permission to film the training and we are all good to go!
What is Shugendo?
Shugendo is a training to put yourself in a mountain to strengthen the mental approach until you feel death. It has a very old history which began in the Nara period (710 ~ 794). Shokai Koshikidake the 72nd lives in Higashine city, Yamagata prefecture as Soke and has been conducting Shugendo training for 30 years.
Even a famous fighter is here!
"Shugendo" is offered to the general public and there we find the world famous fighter, Steven Hayes! He has worked for Dalai Lama as his bodyguard in the past. He has joined the training to strengthen the mental approach and calm his mind.
Tough trail in the mountain.
A total of 19 males and 9 females have joined the training this time mostly subscribed from the internet. Vasudeva is wrapped in a white training clothes and the training has began.
Training #1, Mountain trekking: the goal is to trek to the top of Mt. Koshiki which is located at 1,056m above sea level. A very tough trail with so many ups and downs...
The water temperature is only 3 degrees Celsius! Takigyo experience.
Training #2, Takigyo: takigyo experience at the waterfall that was made by Soke! 2 minutes of standing underneath a waterfall with its water temperature of 3 degrees Celsius. As promised with his brother, Vasudeva is looking to strengthen his mental approach while his brother strengthens his physical approach. This is all for opening up their own Dojo.

Training #3, Dokkyo: once arrived at a hut the Dokkyo training was conducted followed by Training #4, Smoke room: putting yourself in a smoky room trying to feel the same pain as the dead's trapped in hell. The smoke is coming out from burnt hot pepper and dokudami. You are allowed to get out of the room if it reaches your limit but...
So tough not being able to sleep!
Training #5, All night outside Dokkyo: to feel the aura that flows in the mountain the Dokkyo is read outside until 2am, then a bed time! We thought that we weren't allowed to sleep but… An hour later everyone's woken up by the sound Soke's conch shell making! Another training #6, Forced awakening.
The long 3 days has strengthened the mental approach!
Training #7, Forced awakening followed by the smoke room: 27 hours since the training started we're finally allowed to eat something, a cucumber. Training #8, Fasting: to appreciate food by not eating. Then the continued trainings of takigyo and smoke room... And it is time for the last training #9, Waking on fire.
